One of the most annoying things is losing a center cap for one of your aftermarket wheels. It has happened to all of us at one time or another. Sometimes they can just come lose from vibration or the tabs get broken when you have your wheels rotated. Here are some tips to help prevent this from happening to you.
When you have your tires replaced and get them re-balanced your wheel/tire tech will have to remove the center cap this is because the hub of the wheel has to be placed on the mounting and balancing machine. Your wheel is then spun at a high rpm and the computer tells the technician where to place any necessary weights.
- If your center cap has a screw check them on a regular basis to make sure they are not vibrating lose.
- If your cap is a push in that holds on with a rubber o-ring you may want to put just a dab of silicone on the outer edge before replacing, just make sure that the wheel and cap are free of dirt, oil or grease.
- If your cap is the push in type, generally there are plastic tabs with a metal compression ring. Be very careful when removing these types of caps. Over time the tabs can become brittle with age. Do not wiggle the cap side to side to get them to come lose.
- If you think your center caps are being stolen and your wheel requires a screw to hold them on the wheel then you may want to look into purchasing some wheel cap locks. These work similar to wheel locks and require a special key to remove the screw. We carry this type of center cap lock made by Gorilla. You will need to know how long your screw is as well as if it has a flat back to it, the general size of the screw head.
